Who Gets A Corsage?

Hi There,

This is one of those questions that I am often asked.  Here is a general answer.  Corsages are worn by the women you want to honor at your wedding.  The moms, grandmothers, readers, singers and any other “special” guest would get a corsage.  Now, keep in mind, there are a variety of corsages and lately, there has been a trend for moms to carry a single flower or a small nosegay rather than wear a corsage.  Corsages are not always comfortable to wear.  Depending upon the fabric of the dress and the style of the dress, there may not be a place to pin a corsage.  If you are wearing a nice satin, beaded or silk fabric, you don’t want to stick a pin through it …. you will leave pin holes and ruin the dress.  If you are wearing a sleeveless type dress, where would you put the corsage?  There are other options, like a magnet backed corsage….but be aware, those magnets only work well with very light weight flowers and sturdy fabric.

Pin-On Corsage

This example is a pin-on corsage, however, this is an example of a corsage that could have used a magnet backing.  The dendrobium orchids are a light weight flower that works well for the magnet corsage.  Also note that the mom in this picture is wearing a jacket, that is a sturdy fabric and would have held the magnet corsage well.

Another option is a wrist corsage.  And trust me, wrist corsages have come a long way from prom days.  We now have available to us, an assortment of jewelry type bands, that look like bracelets made in pearls or assorted gem stones in a plethera of colors.  This is another corsage made out of dendrobium orchids.

The dendrobium orchids are very light weight, which makes this corsage more comfortable to wear.  I know you have seen, maybe even worn a wrist corsage that has three big roses in it….those are really heavy and not comfortable to wear!

Keep these things in mind when you are ordering or making your corsages.

July 11, 2009 – A Beautiful Day In July for a Wedding

Hi There,

Yesterday turned out to be a beautiful day in the morning, but got a little strange in the afternoon with scattered rain showers!  Yes, rain showers in July!  It was better than temperatures in the 100′s!  This wedding was in the backyard of a family friend.  What a yard this is….it is like a park!

Outdoor Wedding, Garland for the Bar

Outdoor Wedding, Garland for the BarThere were two bars set up for the guests. This bar was just outside the back door of the home. We used two garlands on either end of the table for decoration.Pretty pink centerpieces

The centerpieces for the reception were a mass of pink spider mums, in a short cylinder vase.  The vase is lined with a ti leave and inside I used 1/2 block of floral foam to hold the stems in place.  Very simple, but classy.

In another part of the yard there were cocktail tables set up.  On these tables we used the centerpieces from the night before (Rehearsal Dinner).  It’s a great idea to reuse as much as possible.

This was one of two of the large florals used at the church.  At the church these florals sat in urns on top of pedestals.  One of the florals was left at the church, as a courtesy.  This was came back to the reception and was used on this garden cart for added decor.  Again, it is a great idea to reuse anything you can!

Home Weddings – Things to Think About

Hi There,

Are you thinking about saving money by having your wedding in your home?  Maybe you know someone who has an awsome home and you’d like to use it for your special day.  Home weddings don’t necessarily save you money.  They certainly can, but they don’t always!

When you decide to have a home wedding there are many things you need to think about.  Start out by researching if permits are needed from your city/county for parking, noise and/or music.  I know, some of you are saying, what’s the difference between music and noice…maybe there is no difference to you but there can be a difference.

Then think about the structure, get your ducks in a row like a venue would do.  Do you need to bring in lighting, are there sprinklers that will need to be turned off?  And, not just the day of the wedding, but maybe several days before the wedding to allow time for the lawn to dry.  Nobody wants to walk on a wet lawn!  What weather issues should you plan for…do you need to rent a tent, umbrellas, heaters, misters?  Make sure and provide SHADE for your guests somewhere.  What about bathrooms?  One restroom per 50 guests is a guideline.  Should you provide valet parking?  If you don’t have room for the guests to park on your property, then seriously consider hiring a Valet Parking Service so your guests can drive up to the home, get out and someone else can take their car to park a block or so away.  Make sure and provide a place for your caterer to work and provide some sort of screen so your guests don’t have to see the prep area.  Have your rentals dropped off the DAY BEFORE (always allow yourself some wiggle room for problems).  Set the pick up for the Monday following the wedding.  Some rental companies will extend a discount to you for Thursday dropoffs and Monday pickups.  They get hit with most deliveries and pickups on Friday, Saturday and Sunday…so by opting for a Thursday and Monday you give them some wiggle room too!
