Just Got Interviewed on KFBK

Hi There, This all happened so quickly I didn’t get a change to warn you about my interview on KFBK.  I got a call this afternoon, about 12:30 PM.  I was out to lunch with a group of business owners when the call came in asking if I was available today at 3:40 PM for an interview with Kitty O’Neal and R.E. Graswich.  I made myself available and rushed home to be on a land line for the call.  These interviews always go so fast!!!

Kitty and R.E. are great…..very easy to talk to them and LISTEN to them.  Thank you Kitty and R.E.!

The topic was what are people doing who have lost their jobs or income source because of the economy to reinvent themselves?  You know my story, right?  I’ve been a wedding florist for over 18 years now.  In 2007 the economy started to hit the wedding industry.  Many of my peers were complaining about how slow it was.  That situation didn’t hit me until 2008.  At that time, I hired a Marketing Coach, Katrina Sawa – Jump Start Your Marketing and went on a journey with her to discover what was the best solution for me.  The solution was to write the Do It Yourself Wedding Flower Guide (workbook and DVD’s) showing brides how to do their own wedding flowers and SAVE 50-75% of the cost.  If you’re reading my blog, you know where to find more information about the Do It Yourself Wedding Flower Guide!

Flowers and Hot Temperatures

Hi There,
I was recently asked the question, “are there some flowers that hold up better than others in the heat”?  And the answer is YES!
Flowers that hold up during the summer months better than others, ironically, are your less expensive flowers such as carnations, alstromeria and mums.  Additionally, most tropical flowers are good bets for summer heat as well; although, not categorized as less expensive.  Flowers such as orchids, antherium, ginger, bird of paradise, helliconia and proteas are good examples of tropical flowers that will hold up in the heat.  Other flowers such as crocosmia, craspedia (called Billy Balls), kangaroo paws, yarrow, celosia, eryngium, echinops, lisianthus, freesia, gladiolas, gloriosa lilies, liatris, statice, roses, allium, calla lilies, hybrid lilies and Asiatic lilies will hold up pretty well in the heat.

Where you need to be very careful in the hot summer heat is with flowers that will not have a water source, such as the corsages and boutonnieres.  An experienced florist will know how to give the flower a wet cotton wrap under the tape to help the flower with a water source.

There are some flowers I just can’t recommend for corsages and boutonnieres in heat above 90 degrees.  Tulips, scabiosa, marigolds, ranunculus, phlox, poppies, muscari, daffodils, sweet peas, iris, hydrangea, hyacinthus, gerbera, dahlia, cosmos, lily of the valley, bouvardia, asters, campanula, anemone and delphinium.  Most of these flowers won’t hold up even with a water source in 90 degree or higher temperatures.  So, my advise to you is to avoid these flowers if you know the temperatures will be HOT where you are planning your event.  If you are indoors with air conditioning, use whatever you want with little worries!

California Sales Tax Increase

Hi There, The budget situation in California has been out of control and in a last ditch effort to avoid bankruptsy, the state has initiated a 1% sales tax increase across the board.  The increase became effective 4/1/09.
