Love in the Recession

Hi There, I hope you all had a great Valentine’s Day!  I was alerted to an article today posted on CNNMONEY.com.  Click http://cnnmoneytalkback.blogs.cnnmoney.cnn.com/2009/02/09/wedding_jitters/ to read the story.   The story follows 9 couples planning their weddings and what they are doing to cut back and save money.  After the story, anyone reading it can post a comment.  There are dozens more comments from brides and grooms about what they are doing to save money on their weddings.

One of the common themes is to do your own flowers!  I didn’t need to read this article to know that.  I have seen this trend first hand.  The problem is, do you know how to do your own flowers?  You don’t want to walk down the aisle with wilted, ugly flowers, do you?  If you don’t know what you are doing you may get lucky or you may end up with wilted, ugly flowers.  Let me show you how to do your own flowers the right way.  There are steps that really need to be taken to ensure this…like processing your flowers, using flower preservatives and hydrating liquids and refrigerating the flowers.  If you are going to make the effort to do your own flowers, make the effort to do them right.  You want to be happy and proud of what you did, not embarrassed and remorseful.

I guarantee that if you follow the steps in my Do It Yourself Wedding Flower Guide that you will not be embarrassed or remorseful.  You will be happy and proud of what you accomplished, both with how the flowers turn out and how much money you saved!

Make sure you practice ahead of time.  Allow plenty of time…..do not try to do this the night before your wedding!!!  That is a HUGE mistake!  Get your flowers 3 days ahead of the wedding.  Process them as soon as you get them.  Let them sit overnight.  Two days before the wedding, gather up your family, friends, bridesmaids and anyone else able to help you and get ALL your flowers done.  Keep them refrigerated until you are ready to use them.

Valentine’s Day = High Prices on Flowers

Hi There,  I’ve mentioned before that having a wedding anytime directly before, on or directly after Valentine’s Day will DRASTICALLY affect your flower budget.  Last week, I spend twice as much for my roses, and they were green roses, not red roses.  The cost of flowers starts creeping up during January.  There are many reasons for the price increase.  For domestically grown roses in cold climates, the roses must be kept warm; which means using heaters and fans to keep the roses from getting affected by frost.  Using heaters and fans requires using ENERGY (gas or electric) which is VERY EXPENSIVE.  It takes approximately 45 days from the time a rose is cut off a bush to form and grow and be ready to cut again.  So, at the end of December, growers must cut back their rose crops, in anticipation for Valentine’s Day.  That makes the availability of roses during that timeframe lower than normal.  Which will increase the cost of the roses that are available during that time.  Additionally, remember the old Supply and Demand paradigms?  You got it…… many people want it, there is limited supply, okay to raise the prices!  So, for me, as a florist, the cost of roses, by the time Valentine’s Day gets here can be 3-5 times higher than normal.  I can’t sell those roses without making some money; which means by the time you buy roses for Valentine’s Day, the cost has to go up to you.  Most florists don’t raise their prices to you by the same ratio as they have been raised to us.  YOU get a break from the normal markup, even though it doesn’t feel like it.  My advise to you…..order early!  WE get a break (maybe we only pay 2-3 times the normal price) if we pre-order roses.  In other words, we guarantee we will buy “X” number of roses in advance.  That allows the growers to better prepare for the demand and in turn give the florist a slightly better price than waiting until the last minute.  Be prepared to pay more for your roses and all other flowers for Valentine’s Day.  Be aware that any red, pink or white flower will carry a premium price during this holiday.  If you order green roses instead of red roses, you will most likely be charged less.  I know when I buy my roses for Valentine’s Day I have charges for RED roses, White and Pink Roses, and then all others.  And, the all others, are the least expensive!  Good Luck.  And, Happy Valentine’s Day!

Funny Signage

While in Atlanta, Ga. 2/2/09 I needed to buy some flowers for the television show demo.  I had looked up a wholesale florist in Atlanta, and made arrangements to buy flowers from them.  On my way to the wholesale florist, I saw two signs that cracked me up.  The first sign said, “Just like Cheers, but with nude girls” and the second sign said “30 Women, 29 beautiful and one ugly”.  Most wholesale businesses are not located in the best parts of town!

Every Day with Marcus & Lisa Show

Hi There, I’m just back from my television debut on the Every Day with Marcus and Lisa Show.  It was a lot of fun.  The time went by so fast!

Here are some pictures…..the first one is me getting air brushed!  I’ve never been air-brushed before.

Fantastic Flower Gallery

Hi There, I’m still in Atlanta, Ga.  Tomorrow is my television appearance on Every Day with Marcus and Lisa.  So, today I went shopping for the flowers I need for the show.  I will be doing a demo on how to make a hand-tied bouquet and showing a centerpiece, that will be already made, but I will talk about how to make it.  Both are also covered in the video’s and workbook of my Do It Yourself Wedding Flower Guide.  Anyway, I located a wholesale florist here in Atlanta.  They have a fabulous flower gallery attached to their website which they gave me permission to share with you.  I will be adding it as a link on my website as well as sharing it here with you.  Go to http://cutflower.com/pages/cutflower_wholesale_flower_gallery_search.asp to research what flowers are in season when you need them.  They provide an enormous array of flower pictures in various colors.  So you can research when the flowers are available and what colors are available.

I found a fabulous green rose there that I have never seen anywhere else.  It is called “Super Green”.  It has a ruffled petal edge and some of the petals have a purplish/pinkish tip.  REALLY A GREAT COLOR!!!!  And, since green and blue are the “in” colors for 2009, it has arrived just in time!

If you get a chance, watch me on EveryDay with Marcus and Lisa.  You can go to www.familynettv.com and enter your zip code to find out if it airs where you live.  I will get a DVD taping of the segment.  So, if you don’t get it, at some point I will be able to make it available for you to watch.

Wish me luck!  Think good thoughts for me, please.  Thank you!
